August 28 Hailstorm in Spring & Cypress: What to Do About Your Car Now

A Quarter-Size Hailstorm Hit North Houston on August 28

At about 5:00 PM on Friday, August 28, 2026, NOAA's Storm Prediction Center logged quarter-size (1.00″) hail 2 miles south of Spring (official storm report). The storm moved across north Harris County, so cars from Spring and Klein down to Champions, Willowbrook and FM 1960 may have been hit.

Quarter-size is the point where hail starts to dent cars. It doesn’t usually crack glass or shred paint, which is exactly why so much of this damage goes unnoticed. The timing didn't help: at 5 PM on a Friday, a lot of cars were parked at work or out on the road, not where their owners could see them. More than a month later, plenty of cars in the area are still driving around with dimpled roofs and hoods, and plenty of owners haven’t filed a claim yet. Here’s what to do if yours might be one of them.

Hail sucks. Here's how we help Cypress and Spring drivers get it fixed.

How to Tell If Your Car Was Damaged

Hail dents from quarter-size stones are shallow, and in flat daylight they can be almost invisible. Check the roof, hood and trunk lid first, since those panels face the sky. The easiest test is a reflection: stand at an angle where a straight line, like a roofline, a garage light or a parking-lot stripe, reflects across the panel. Where the line wobbles or zigzags, there’s a dent.

A straight reflection that zigzags across the hood is the giveaway for shallow hail dents.

What to Do Now: 5 Steps

  1. Photograph the damage. Take wide shots of each panel and close-ups at an angle. Note where the car was parked on August 28.
  2. Check your policy. Hail falls under comprehensive coverage. Look for your deductible, whether you have rental coverage, and any deadline for reporting storm damage.
  3. Get a free inspection before the adjuster’s estimate. We document every strike, so the estimate covers all of the damage, not just what’s easy to see. Book a free hail inspection.
  4. File the claim. In Texas, hail is a no-fault comprehensive claim, so carriers generally don’t raise premiums for it.
  5. Choose your own shop. Texas law lets you pick who repairs your car. Your insurer can recommend a shop, but it can’t require one. Here’s how that works.

Will a Hail Claim Raise My Insurance Rates?

Hail is weather you had no control over, which is what comprehensive coverage exists for. In Texas it’s treated as a no-fault claim, and carriers generally don’t raise premiums for it. The bigger financial risk is not filing: unrepaired hail damage comes off your trade-in value later. More on Houston hail claims →

Why Paintless Dent Repair Is the Right Fix for Quarter-Size Hail

Quarter-size hail dents the metal but usually leaves the paint intact. That’s the ideal case for paintless dent repair: we work each dent out from behind the panel, so your factory finish stays exactly as it left the plant. No filler, no repaint, and nothing to explain at trade-in. Most hail repairs take 3 to 5 business days. If a strike did crack the paint, our sister shop Collision Craftsman handles it at the same address. How our hail damage repair works →

Be Careful With Pop-Up Hail Tents

After every big storm, temporary hail repair tents appear in parking lots. Some do fine work, but many move on when the storm work dries up, and a guarantee only helps if the shop is still around. We’ve served Houston from the same shop since 2000. Why storm chasers are risky →
